Three Steps to Surefire Success

Published by at 2:57 pm under Product Development

This week, we’re going to look more in depth at the steps and strategies you’ll need to be a successful product developer and online seller.

One of the most common questions new internet sellers ask is, “What should I sell?” This can be phrased in many different ways: what should I sell, what’s a good niche, where can I find stuff to sell – you get the idea. Product developers go through a similar process: I know a lot about knot tying, how do I write an ebook about it?; I love to play piano, can I make a DVD about it?; how can I put my Camtasia videos on a membership site?

The problem is, most sellers have this backwards.

There are 3 simple steps you must take to succeed online:

1. Define your market. Before you do anything else, decide who you want to sell to, not what you want to sell.
2. Find out what your market wants.
3. Sell it to them.

Those three steps will work every time, but you’ll be surprised at how hard it is to follow them.

Don’t pick a product or ‘niche’ or hobby or personal passion and try to sell it. The oft repeated advice, “follow your bliss” might work at a street fair, or even in a specialty mall, but it is suicide on the internet. You are harder to find on the internet than a needle in a haystack – and your product is even more invisible because no one is looking for it.

Instead, if you want to succeed, follow that other marketing chestnut: Give the people what they want.
