There are plenty of work-arounds and alternatives if your camcorder doesn’t meet your exact needs in every situation. Don’t despair. Someone else has probably faced the same situation and found a solution.

For instance, if you want to use a shotgun microphone, but your camcorder lacks a hot shoe – you can use an accessory bracket like the Sima Video Bracket to mount the microphone. The Bescor Flash Bracket does the job as well.
